
Huawei, a global provider of Information and Communication Technology is investing in renewable energy solutions in its expansion into the Kenyan market.
The tech giant seeks to increase renewable energy penetration to reduce its carbon footprint as it solidifies its presence in Kenya’s burgeoning market.
The company says this expansion is in line with its sustainability strategy in operations and supply chain.
“Renewable energy will be the main trend in the world in the coming years, more and more people need to know its importance and how we can speed up its penetration in Kenya to have industries embrace a carbon free society”.

The company in one of its cloud’s data centre in Gui’an, has incorporated green and intelligent technologies in its design. Its power usage effectiveness has seen it able to offset tons of carbon emissions.

The company hosted news editors for a meeting, in its strategy to create awareness on its goal to have every home, individuals , and organisations digitally connected through cloud computing. It is investing in a solar powered data centre facility.
Kenya Editors Guild KEG CEO Rosalia Omungo said plans to have a media sustainability fund are in the pipeline to mitigate the effects of the disruption currently witnessed in the media sector. She said KEG will partner with Huawei in embracing programs that will expand the sharing of knowledge and capacity towards a digital economy that is alive to emerging trends that focus on a zero carbon world.

Huawei has solar plants in Kenya stationed in Garissa, Eldoret and Malindi that have a capacity of 410MW. The company manufactures inverters and is partnering with those in the power ecosystem to supply these for homes and organizations.
The solar industry in Kenya is dominated by inferior quality equipment and poor installations. Huawei is working with industry players like Kenya’s Energy Regulatory Authority EPRA to train and equip skills that will enhance the penetration and adoption of green energy technologies.
